Molecular profiles of illicit drugsstructures, masses and fingerprints

Every compound we analyse has a unique molecular structure. This page shows the structure, formula, molar mass and protonated mass of each one, together with a molecular fingerprint drawn as a double helix. It is the closest thing a drug has to DNA.

How to reada molecular profile

  1. Skeletal structureLines are carbon to carbon bonds, with carbon and most hydrogen atoms implied. Nitrogen is shown in blue and oxygen in orange.
  2. FormulaThe number of each type of atom in the molecule, such as C10H15N for methamphetamine.
  3. Molar massThe average mass of one mole of the compound, in grams per mole.
  4. [M+H]⁺The monoisotopic mass of the protonated molecule, the ion typically measured in mass spectrometry.
  5. Molecular fingerprintA 128 bit code generated from the structure, drawn as a helix. The first 64 bits form one strand and the last 64 the other.

Structures, formulae and masses are generated from each compound's defined structure. Fingerprints are 128 bit circular fingerprints that include stereochemistry.

Why structure matters,in the laboratory

Identifying a drug is about telling similar molecules apart with confidence. Methamphetamine and amphetamine differ by a single methyl group. MDMA and MDA differ in the same way. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine have exactly the same atoms and the same mass, and differ only in the orientation of one bond.

Laboratory methods are designed around those differences. Compounds are separated from each other, measured against reference standards and confirmed by their mass and behaviour in the instrument, with quality control samples run alongside client samples.

That is why a laboratory certificate can report each compound on its own line, and why a not detected result can be relied on. The profiles on this page are a way to see the molecules behind those results.

Frequently askedquestions

Answers to common questions about structures, fingerprints and how they relate to laboratory analysis.

Do drugs have DNA?

No. DNA belongs to living organisms. Drugs are molecules, and each one has a unique structure. The molecular fingerprint on each profile is a code generated from that structure, which works as a unique identifier in a similar way.

What is a molecular fingerprint?

A molecular fingerprint is a string of bits generated from the arrangement of atoms and bonds in a molecule. Chemists use fingerprints to search and compare large libraries of compounds. Each fingerprint on this page is 128 bits long and is drawn as a double helix.

Why do ephedrine and pseudoephedrine have different fingerprints?

They share the same formula and mass but differ in the three-dimensional arrangement around one carbon atom. Their fingerprints are generated with that stereochemistry included, so they come out different.

What does [M+H]⁺ mean?

It is the monoisotopic mass of the molecule with one extra proton attached. This protonated ion is typically what is measured in mass spectrometry, so it is a useful reference figure for laboratory identification.

Is laboratory identification based on these fingerprints?

No. The fingerprints are a way to visualise each molecule. Laboratory identification relies on analytical instruments, reference standards and quality controls, and results are reported on a certificate for each sample.

Drug Residue Sampling Kits

NIOSH 9111 wipe kits containing pre-wetted wipes, 100 cm² templates, gloves, sample containers and digital documentation. Dispatched Australia wide.

What is in the kit

  • Pre-wetted wipes ready for NIOSH 9111 sampling
  • 100 cm² templates for a consistent sampled area
  • Gloves, so every sample starts with a fresh pair
  • Labelled sample containers
  • Digital documentation, with no paper forms to fill in or post

How it works

Call the laboratory with the site and the question you need answered and we will recommend the panel and the number of samples. Kits are dispatched Australia wide.

Collect your samples, register them digitally and send them back to our Fairfield, Queensland facility. Standard results are reported within 24 hours of receipt and priority results within 12 hours.

Who orders kits

Decontamination and remediation companies, cleaning crews, property managers, hygienists and home owners who want to sample themselves and send the wipes to an analytical laboratory.

Training

NIOSH 9111 Sampling Method Support

Method guidance, sampling plans and toolbox training for decontamination and cleaning crews collecting their own samples.

What we help with

  • Sampling plans that match the question, the property and the panel
  • Template placement and a consistent wipe technique
  • Glove changes and handling that prevent cross contamination
  • Field blanks, labelling and digital registration
  • Choosing between screening and clearance approaches

Toolbox training

Short, practical sessions for crews who collect their own samples. The aim is simple: every wipe that arrives at the laboratory should be collected the same way, so the numbers can be trusted and compared between jobs.

Why it matters

A result can only be as good as the sample. Most disputed results trace back to sampling, not analysis, and ten minutes of method advice before a job regularly saves a resample later.
