Two compounds, one family, very different implications

In everyday conversation "amphetamines" is used loosely to cover a whole group of stimulants, and that imprecision causes real problems in property assessment. Amphetamine and methamphetamine are distinct chemicals. They differ by a single methyl group, they behave differently in the body, and — critically for anyone assessing a building — they arrive on surfaces by different routes.

Methamphetamine on a surface in a residential property is usually the residue of the finished product: smoked, handled, spilled or stored. Amphetamine can arrive the same way, but in Australian clandestine laboratory work it very frequently appears as an intermediate or by-product of the synthesis route used to produce methamphetamine, or as evidence of a separate manufacturing process altogether.

That distinction changes the assessment. A property with methamphetamine alone and no amphetamine is most consistent with use. A property showing both, particularly with amphetamine present in a proportion that does not match street product ratios, raises the genuine possibility of manufacture on site — and manufacture implies solvent damage, precursor residue, corrosive by-products and contamination of building cavities that a surface clean will never resolve.

Why a combined result is not good enough

Some testing services report a single combined figure for "amphetamine-type substances". It is a simpler analysis to run, and for a first-pass screen it can be defensible. But as a basis for scoping remediation it is close to useless, because it discards the one piece of information that would have told the contractor what kind of contamination event they are dealing with.

Our method separates the two compounds chromatographically and identifies each by its own mass signature, so your certificate carries independent concentrations for amphetamine and methamphetamine at every sample location. That is what allows a hygienist to look at the ratio across a property, not just the total, and reach a supportable conclusion about history and scope.

The practical consequence is significant. Scoping a suspected clandestine laboratory as though it were a use-only property leaves contamination in place, fails clearance and results in rework. Scoping a use-only property as though it were a former laboratory can add a great deal of unnecessary material removal. Speciation is the simplest insurance against either mistake.

Who orders speciated amphetamines analysis

Illicit drug remediation companies are the primary users, almost always at the pre-works scoping stage on a property with a known or suspected criminal history. Where police have executed a warrant, where equipment or glassware has been found, or where a property presents unexplained staining, corrosion or solvent odour, speciated results inform whether the job is a decontamination or a strip-out.

Environmental hygienists use speciation when they are asked to form an opinion rather than simply report a number. An assessment report that concludes "consistent with manufacturing activity" or "consistent with use only" needs analytical support behind it, and a combined result cannot provide that.

Property owners and insurers commission the analysis when the difference between the two scenarios has real consequences. Policy wordings, liability apportionment and claims for consequential loss frequently turn on whether a property was used or manufactured in, and a speciated certificate is the evidentiary foundation for that argument.

Vehicle and equipment assessments are a smaller but steady category. Transport used in production or distribution often carries an amphetamine signature that would be missed by a methamphetamine-only test.

Sampling for a speciation assessment

Speciated work uses the same NIOSH 9111 wipe method as our other surface analyses — pre-wetted wipe, 100 cm² template, standardised overlapping strokes, gloves and template discarded between samples. What changes is the sampling plan. Where a routine methamphetamine screen aims for representative coverage of living spaces, a speciation assessment deliberately targets the locations where manufacturing residue would be expected to concentrate.

Pairing speciation with precursor analysis

The strongest assessments combine speciated amphetamines with pseudoephedrine and ephedrine precursor analysis. Precursors are the raw materials of the common Australian synthesis routes, and their presence on a surface is difficult to explain by use alone. Where amphetamine appears alongside pseudoephedrine or ephedrine, the case for manufacturing activity becomes considerably stronger than either result would support on its own.

Conversely, a property showing methamphetamine with no amphetamine and no precursors can be scoped with reasonable confidence as a use-contamination job, which usually means surface cleaning, sealing and soft furnishing removal rather than structural intervention. Because a single wipe extract can be analysed for both suites, clients frequently order speciated amphetamines and precursors together, or simply step up to the comprehensive panel and cover the full picture in one submission.

How the laboratory handles your samples

Internal standards correct for any recovery variation between samples.

Because amphetamine and methamphetamine are structurally similar, resolution is the critical quality parameter in this analysis. The certificate lists every sample by location, surface type, sampled area and collection timestamp, then reports amphetamine and methamphetamine concentrations separately in micrograms per 100 cm², each with its own stated reporting limit. Methamphetamine results are read against the 0.5 µg/100 cm² Australian remediation guideline. Amphetamine has no separately adopted numeric guideline in the Australian context, so it functions as an interpretive indicator rather than a trigger level — its value lies in the pattern and the ratio it reveals rather than in a threshold comparison.
